Punto Fijo lies on the western shore of the Paraguaná Peninsula, a flat, dry tongue of land that reaches north from the Venezuelan mainland into the Caribbean. On a map the town is a mostly rectilinear grid, its blocks spreading inland from the coast with little in the way of hills or rivers to bend them. Water on one side and open scrubland on the other give the drawing a clean edge.
The town grew quickly from the 1940s, when oil companies built refineries at Amuay and Cardón on either side of it. Together they now form the Paraguaná Refining Complex, one of the largest refining centres in the world. Their tank farms, jetties and service roads are the most distinctive geometry on the page: circles, straight lines and piers running out into the sea.

The coast runs along the western side of town, a sharp line between built-up blocks and the open water of the Gulf of Venezuela, with piers reaching out from it.

Streets extend across level, dry ground in a largely regular pattern, giving the map a steady rhythm of blocks that thins out gradually toward the surrounding scrub.
