Puteaux is on the left bank of the Seine, just west of Paris in Hauts-de-Seine. The river bends along its eastern side, and the long, narrow Île de Puteaux lies in the channel, covered in sports grounds and greenery. On a map, the waterfront, the island and the bridges give the commune a clear eastern edge.
To the north, the street pattern changes completely. Much of the La Défense business district, including the Grande Arche, stands on Puteaux territory. The large raised esplanade and the tower footprints form a monumental, geometric block that looks nothing like the ordinary streets further south. South of La Défense, Puteaux keeps the texture of an older Paris suburb, with a town centre, market streets and residential blocks rising gently from the river. The historical axis that starts at the Louvre and runs through the Arc de Triomphe continues across the Seine here to the Grande Arche, and that straight line is easy to follow on the map.
