Qeshm town lies at the eastern end of Qeshm Island, the largest island in the Persian Gulf, in Iran's Hormozgan province. From above it is a coastal town with water on several sides. Its streets spread back from a shoreline that faces the mainland port of Bandar Abbas and the small island of Hormuz across the channel.
The island is known for its geology and wildlife. Its eroded canyons, salt caves and rock formations are recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The Hara mangrove forests, in the channel between the island and the mainland, are among the most important in the region. The island is also a free trade zone, which has driven much of the town's recent growth.
