Qibao sits in Minhang District on the western side of Shanghai, and its map is a study in scale. At the centre is a compact old town laid out along narrow canals, with lanes barely wider than a footpath running parallel to the water. Around it, the city has grown in large rectangular superblocks, residential compounds and broad arterial roads that make the historic core look tiny.
The old town traces its origins back roughly a thousand years, and its name, meaning seven treasures, comes from a local legend about precious objects once kept here.
