Qillīn is a town in Kafr el-Sheikh governorate in the northern Nile Delta, one of the most intensively farmed landscapes on earth. On a map the built area forms a dense cluster of short, irregular streets, packed closely together in the manner of many Delta towns, and surrounded on every side by fields divided into narrow strips.
Irrigation canals run through and around the town, some straight and some gently curving, and roads often follow their banks. These waterways give the map its structure: they set the edges of neighbourhoods, guide the main routes toward neighbouring towns, and cross the field pattern in long lines. In the countryside, villages appear as small, dense islands among the plots.
Kafr el-Sheikh governorate lies between the Rosetta branch of the Nile and the northern lakes, and its towns grew with the agriculture around them.
