Qufu lies in south-western Shandong, on the plain north of the Si River. At its heart is a nearly rectangular old city, still outlined by walls and a moat, with streets running in a regular pattern inside. The Temple of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion take up a large part of the centre. Their long courtyard compounds run north to south.
This is the birthplace of Confucius, and the city has been linked to him and his descendants for more than two thousand years. The Temple, the Kong Family Mansion and the Cemetery of Confucius, a large wooded area north of the city, were inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
A Qufu map poster shows one of the clearest examples of a traditional Chinese city plan. The walled rectangle, the long axial temple complexes and the regular streets are all visible in outline.
