Rabat sits where the Bou Regreg river meets the Atlantic, and the river mouth is the pivot of its map. On the south bank, the Kasbah of the Udayas occupies a rocky point above the water. Behind it the medina fills a triangle bounded by walls, the ocean and the river. Across the estuary, Salé mirrors it with an old town of its own.
South of the medina the plan changes character. The Ville Nouvelle, laid out under the French protectorate in the early twentieth century, has broad avenues, planned axes and green spaces. The Almohad walls still run along its edge. Further along the river, the unfinished Hassan Tower stands beside the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and newer districts extend south along the coast.
In 2012 UNESCO listed Rabat as a World Heritage Site, recognising both the historic city and its modern capital planning. A Rabat map poster shows these layers at a glance. Medina and kasbah
The walled old city forms a dense triangle of lanes at the river mouth. The kasbah on its headland marks the northern tip of the capital.
Almohad walls
Walls from the twelfth century run for kilometres across the city. On a map they appear as a long straight line dividing the old districts from the newer quarters.
