Rājkot lies on the flat, dry plateau of Saurashtra in Gujarat, beside the Aji River, which runs along the eastern side of the old city. The river is modest for much of the year, but it gives the map a clear natural boundary. Several reservoirs on the outskirts, including Aji and Lalpari to the east and Nyari to the west, add broad, irregular water shapes around the city.
The historic centre is a dense knot of bazaar lanes and old houses, once the seat of a princely state. Just west of it, the Race Course grounds form a large open space ringed by a road and surrounded by civic buildings and gardens, one of the city's most distinctive shapes. Beyond these older areas, a ring road encircles newer neighbourhoods laid out in more regular grids.
Rājkot is closely tied to Mahatma Gandhi, who spent much of his childhood here; his family home and Alfred High School, where he studied, are now museums.
