Ramallo is in the north of Buenos Aires Province, on the right bank of the Paraná River between San Nicolás de los Arroyos and San Pedro. On the map it is a classic Argentine town plan: square blocks in a regular grid, a central plaza, and straight streets running inland from the river toward flat Pampas farmland.
The river edge is what makes the drawing interesting. The town stands on the barranca, the raised bank that lines this stretch of the river. Below it the Paraná breaks into a wide mosaic of islands, side channels and wetland. In black and white, the orderly grid and the loose, braided water share one frame.
