Rāman, also known as Rama Mandi, is a town in Bathinda district in the Malwa region of Punjab. The land here is almost perfectly flat, and from above the town is a compact cluster of streets set in a vast, orderly patchwork of fields. Straight farm roads and irrigation channels divide the countryside into rectangles that continue to the edge of the frame.
As its alternative name suggests, Rāman grew as a mandi, a market town serving the surrounding agricultural villages. The Malwa plain is one of India's most productive farming regions, and the canal network that makes this possible is clearly visible on the map. In recent decades, large-scale industry has also arrived in the wider area around the town.
