Randfontein grew up on the western arm of the Witwatersrand gold reef in the late nineteenth century, and the map still shows that origin. Its residential streets form orderly blocks, while the edges give way to larger, irregular parcels of land shaped by mining, rail sidings and industry. From above, the town looks less like one centre than a set of districts that grew around the work that supported them.
In black and white, the contrast between planned and worked ground stands out. The fine mesh of suburban roads gives the page texture, and the broad empty patches around it, left by former mine sites and open grassland, give it room to breathe. Railway lines add long, gently curving strokes that cut across the grid in a way ordinary streets never would.
