Rangiora is the largest town in the Waimakariri District, about thirty kilometres north of Christchurch on the Canterbury Plains. The land here is almost perfectly flat, and the town reflects that. Streets run in long straight lines and cross at right angles around a central shopping area, and newer subdivisions have been added at the edges as the town has grown.
To the north the Ashley River, Rakahuri in Māori, spreads across a wide gravel bed in braided channels, a typical Canterbury river form that looks striking on a map. Farmland surrounds the town in a patchwork of rectangular paddocks, shelterbelts and rural roads. The edges of Rangiora are therefore clear, with the built-up area sitting like one block within a larger grid.
The town grew quickly after the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, when many households moved north from Christchurch, and much of the new housing on its fringes dates from that period. North of town the river spreads into braided channels over a broad gravel bed, drawing fine interlaced lines that contrast with the rigid streets.
