Rangiro lies in the hills of Rwanda's Western Province, in the high country that rises between the shores of Lake Kivu and the mountain forest of Nyungwe. There is no grid here. Settlement is spread along ridges and slopes, and homes and small centres are linked by roads and footpaths that follow the easiest line through steep, heavily farmed terrain.
Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and this corner of the country shows why. Valleys fold into one another, streams run through the lowest ground, and hillsides are divided into small plots. Tea is an important crop in the uplands of the southwest, and the forest of Nyungwe National Park forms the natural boundary to the east.

Between the ridges, narrow valleys and stream beds cut through the map. They create a rhythm of high and low ground that defines the whole district.
