Rānikhet sits on a ridge in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, at around 1,800 metres, with pine and oak forest on the slopes below. On a map the town is shaped almost entirely by terrain. Roads curve along the ridgeline and loop down the hillsides, and the built-up areas spread thinly along them instead of forming a compact centre.
The British developed the town as a cantonment in the nineteenth century, and it remains an army town, home to the regimental centre of the Kumaon Regiment. On clear days it looks north across the valleys to a long line of Himalayan summits, including Nanda Devi. The orchards of Chaubatia and the high golf course at Upat lie nearby.

The army cantonment gives parts of Rānikhet a more ordered structure, with widely spaced buildings, parade grounds and tree-lined roads set among the forest.
