Rastatt lies in the Upper Rhine plain, just east of the Rhine. The River Murg flows through the town before joining the Rhine a short distance downstream. The centre is built around the Baroque residence palace of the Margraves of Baden-Baden. Broad, straight streets lead away from its forecourt in a planned, ceremonial layout that is unusual for a town of this size.
In the nineteenth century Rastatt became a fortress of the German Confederation. Much of the ring of fortifications has since disappeared, but traces remain in the curve of the roads and the green spaces around the old town. The Congress of Rastatt was held here between 1797 and 1799, and the Favorite Palace stands just outside the town.
The Rastatt map poster makes the Baroque plan easy to read. A palace sits at the head of formal axes, the Murg cuts across the town, and the wider railways, industrial areas and suburbs spread across the flat plain towards the Rhine meadows.

The Murg crosses the town in a gentle curve on its way to the nearby Rhine. It provides a natural line through the otherwise regular plan.

The shape of the old fortifications shows up in curved roads and green belts around the centre. It's a faint ring that is still visible on the printed map.
