Rātu lies on the Chota Nagpur plateau in Jharkhand, a short distance northwest of Ranchi. It sits on rolling upland with farmland, ponds and patches of woodland. On a map the town gathers along the main road out of the state capital, with lanes branching off into residential areas and nearby villages.
The town is known for Ratu Palace, the early twentieth-century residence of the Nagvanshi rulers of Chotanagpur. The large building still stands and draws crowds during the Durga Puja festival. Closer links with Ranchi have made Rātu partly a suburb and partly a market town for the surrounding countryside.

The main road runs through the town toward Ranchi, forming the densest line of shops and houses and linking Rātu to the state capital.
