Reçani, more often written Rissani, is at the southern end of the Tafilalt oasis in southeastern Morocco. On the map this is where the palm groves of the Ziz valley stop and the pre-Saharan plain begins. The town has a market centre, and the palmeraie around it is dotted with ksour, the fortified earthen villages of the region.
Rissani's history reaches back to Sijilmasa, the medieval caravan city whose ruins lie just outside the modern town. For centuries Sijilmasa was a key stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes. The Tafilalt is also the ancestral home of the Alaouite dynasty, and the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif stands nearby.
