Recife takes its name from the reef that runs parallel to the coast and shelters the harbour, and on a map water shapes almost everything. The Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers meet near the sea and split the old centre into islands and peninsulas. A series of bridges joins the districts of Recife Antigo, Santo Antônio and São José to each other and to the mainland.
Beyond the centre, the Capibaribe winds west through the city in wide loops, with neighbourhoods following its bends. To the south a long, straight coastline runs past Boa Viagem, its beach avenue lined with tall buildings. To the north the old town of Olinda sits on its hill, almost joined to Recife by continuous streets.
Its many bridges and waterways have earned the city the nickname Venice of Brazil.
