Rodez stands on a steep promontory above the valley of the Aveyron River in southern France, and its map makes the site immediately clear. The old town occupies the summit in a tight, rounded shape, enclosed by boulevards that trace the line of its former walls, while newer districts spread down the slopes and across the plateau.
At the centre stands the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, built of red sandstone, with a tall bell tower visible from far around. Rodez is also the birthplace of the painter Pierre Soulages, and a museum dedicated to his work opened here in 2014.
