Ronse, known in French as Renaix, lies in the south of East Flanders, close to the border with Wallonia. It sits in the Flemish Ardennes, a landscape of steep little hills, sunken lanes and valleys that stands out in otherwise flat Flanders. From above, the town centre fills a hollow, and its streets climb outward toward the higher ground around it.
Ronse is a Dutch-speaking municipality with language facilities for French speakers, a reflection of its position on the linguistic border. The collegiate church of Saint Hermes, with its large Romanesque crypt, has long been a place of pilgrimage. The town's textile industry once employed much of its population.
