Rosny-sous-Bois lies just east of Paris in Seine-Saint-Denis, and infrastructure shapes its map. The A3 and A86 motorways meet on the edge of town, railway lines cross it, and the large Rosny 2 shopping centre forms a distinct block near the interchange. Between these corridors, residential streets fill the ground with a mix of older houses and larger apartment estates.
The name recalls the woods that once covered the area. The land rises gently towards the Plateau d'Avron on the eastern side, and the Fort de Rosny, one of the nineteenth-century forts built around Paris, still occupies a large site in the commune. Both help explain why the street pattern changes so much from one district to the next.
