Rottweil sits on high ground above the upper Neckar, and the map makes its medieval planning easy to read. Two main streets cross near the centre, dividing the old town into quarters, and the former line of the walls still shows in the curve of the streets around the edge. Below, the river runs through a deep, winding valley.
The town traces its origins to the Roman settlement of Arae Flaviae and is usually described as the oldest town in Baden-Württemberg. It also gave its name to the Rottweiler dog breed. More recently, the tall elevator test tower on the edge of town has become a landmark visible across the surrounding countryside.
