Roubion is a perched village in the mountains of the Alpes-Maritimes, well inland from Nice. Its houses crowd onto a narrow ridge with the valley falling away below. On a map the old centre forms a tight, irregular knot of lanes, since the terrain leaves almost no room to spread. The edges of the village are set by the rock.
Higher up, the small resort of Roubion-les-Buisses offers skiing not far from the coast, a reminder that the Alps begin a short distance from the Mediterranean. Much of the commune is steep, wooded mountain country reached by winding roads, which makes the village feel remote despite its location.
