Rurópolis lies in the Brazilian state of Pará, in the Amazon region, where the Trans-Amazonian Highway meets the road running north toward Santarém. The town was established in the 1970s as part of a federal colonisation programme, which imagined a hierarchy of new settlements along the highway. Its full name, Rurópolis Presidente Médici, still carries that period.
From above, the town is a compact block of streets laid out around the highway junction, surrounded by farmland cleared from the forest. Beyond the edge of town, side roads run off at regular intervals into the countryside, creating the long, comb-like pattern often seen along Amazon highways where settlement followed the road.
