Ryazan lies on the right bank of the Oka River, south-east of Moscow, and its oldest part stands on a raised bluff above the floodplain. The Ryazan Kremlin, with the Assumption Cathedral and other churches, occupies this high ground, which the small Trubezh river loops around. From there the city extends inland, away from the low, wide meadows of the Oka.
The street plan of the historic centre was regularised in the late eighteenth century, and several streets still converge toward the kremlin. Further out, Soviet and later districts form broad blocks along the main avenues, while the Oka floodplain stays largely open. On a monochrome map the river side looks strikingly empty, which makes the built city feel even more compact.
Ryazan is the birthplace of the physiologist Ivan Pavlov, and the poet Sergei Yesenin was born in a village in the surrounding region. The city is also known for its airborne forces academy. Several main streets converge on the historic core, a legacy of the late eighteenth-century plan. They give the middle of the map a fan-like structure.
Oka meadows
The broad floodplain of the Oka lies beyond the kremlin and is mostly unbuilt. That leaves the river side of the map open and quiet compared with the dense streets inland.
