Saint-Dié-des-Vosges lies in a narrow valley of the Meurthe, where the river runs east to west through the town and wooded ridges rise steeply on either side. From above, the built area stretches along the water, and roads thread up side valleys into the forest. The mountains set the outline, so the town reads as a long band rather than a round cluster.
Much of the centre was destroyed in November 1944 and rebuilt in the decades after the war. The result on a map is unusually regular for an old Lorraine town: straighter streets and broad blocks around the cathedral quarter. Le Corbusier's Claude et Duval factory, one of his few built works from that reconstruction period, stands near the river.
The town has a place in the history of cartography. In 1507, scholars working here published the Cosmographiae Introductio, which accompanied the Waldseemüller world map, the first to use the name America.
