Saint-Georges is the main city of the Beauce region of Quebec, south of Quebec City. The Chaudière River runs through its centre from south to north and divides the city into a west side and an east side. Several bridges connect the two banks.
The river shapes the city in other ways too. The Chaudière is known for spring flooding, and the valley floor is narrow, so streets climb the slopes on both sides. Upstream, a dam controls the river's flow. Beyond the city, the surrounding farmland is divided into the long, narrow lots typical of rural Quebec.
