Saint-Joseph lies in the centre of Martinique, set back from the coast north of Fort-de-France. On the map it has no shoreline to organise it. Its shape comes from hills and the valleys cut into them, with roads that follow the ridges and rivers instead of a planned grid. Settlements spread out in clusters along these routes.
The commune slopes up toward the island's forested mountain interior, and rivers from the higher ground cross its territory on their way to the lowlands. The land is green, steep in places, and farmed where the slopes allow. For many residents it combines rural life with an easy link to the capital.
