Saint-Paul occupies a long stretch of Réunion's western coast, from the bay at its historic centre down to the beaches of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains and the lagoon beyond. From above, the commune looks like a series of settlements strung along the shoreline, with roads climbing inland in long bends up the slopes of the island's volcanic massif. Deep ravines cut between them, running from the heights to the sea.
The town is where the island's first permanent settlers arrived in the seventeenth century, and for a time it served as Réunion's capital. Its seafront Marine Cemetery holds the grave attributed to the pirate Olivier Levasseur, known as La Buse. Today the commune combines a market town, beach districts and quieter hillside neighbourhoods.
