Saint-Vincent-de-Paul is a district in the east of Laval, on Île Jésus, facing Montreal across the Rivière des Prairies. From above, the river defines the southern edge. Streets run inland from the shore in a mix of older, straighter roads and newer residential crescents and cul-de-sacs, which gives the map two quite different textures.
The oldest part of the area grew up around a parish village by the water, and traces of that early road pattern can still be seen near the shoreline. Further inland, postwar suburban development fills the map with looping streets, schools, parks and road corridors that connect the district with the rest of Laval and with Montreal across the river.
In Quebec the name is widely known because of the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Penitentiary, a federal prison that operated here from the nineteenth century until it closed in 1989.
