Sakai, in Fukui Prefecture, was formed in 2006 by merging several towns, and its map reflects that. Separate centres are spread across a wide plain of rice fields, joined by roads and rail. To the west the land meets the Sea of Japan, and the Kuzuryū River reaches the coast at the old port of Mikuni.
The shoreline is the city's most dramatic edge. North of Mikuni, the Tōjinbō cliffs rise from the sea in columns of basalt, one of the best-known coastal sights on this side of Japan. Inland, Maruoka Castle stands on a low hill in the old castle town. Its keep is often counted among the oldest surviving in Japan.
