Saltillo, capital of Coahuila, sits on a high valley in northern Mexico, framed to the south and east by the Sierra de Zapalinamé. From above, the city spreads across fairly flat ground, with a compact historic centre and wider, newer districts extending north toward Ramos Arizpe, where large automotive plants stand.
The historic centre is anchored by the Cathedral of Santiago, known for its elaborate baroque facade, and the plaza in front of it. Saltillo is also known for the sarape, the colourful woven blanket long associated with the city, and for the Museo del Desierto, dedicated to the Chihuahuan Desert.
