San Benito Abad lies in the south of Sucre Department, in the low wetlands of La Mojana in northern Colombia. On a map the town is a small, tight grid of streets surrounded by water in almost every form. Marshes, channels, ciénagas and floodplains swell and shrink with the seasons. The land between them is flat and low, and there are few roads.
Across Colombia the town is best known as a pilgrimage centre. Its basilica houses the image of the Señor de los Milagros, and every year large numbers of pilgrims come to visit it, many travelling through the surrounding wetlands. The town's religious importance far exceeds its size, and it is the main reason people across the country know its name.
