San Carlos is a town in Maldonado Department, in southeastern Uruguay, a short drive inland from the coast at Maldonado and Punta del Este. It was founded in the 1760s by the Spanish governor Pedro de Cevallos. The first settlers included families of Azorean origin. The town still follows the planned layout of that time.
From above, San Carlos is a clear example of the Spanish colonial grid. Square blocks are laid out evenly around a central plaza, where the old church stands. A creek, the Arroyo San Carlos, curves past the town, and its soft line contrasts with the right angles of the streets. Farmland and scattered houses surround the grid on all sides.
