San José de Barlovento lies in the Barlovento region of Miranda state, a stretch of humid lowland between the coastal mountains and the Caribbean. The name Barlovento means windward. From above, the town is a compact grid of blocks set in a much larger green landscape, with small rivers and drainage channels winding through the flat ground around it.
The region has long been associated with cacao, and plantations once covered much of the plain. Barlovento is also known across Venezuela for its Afro-Venezuelan drum traditions, especially around the feast of San Juan in June. Towns here are modest in size, and the streets tend to gather around a central plaza and church before thinning into the countryside.
