San José del Cabo lies near the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, where desert hills run down to the Sea of Cortez. From above, the town has two distinct parts. The compact historic centre, with its grid of short streets around a central plaza, sits a little way inland, while hotels and newer neighbourhoods line the coast. At the edge of town the San José estuary forms a green, watery pocket against the arid land.
The town grew from a Jesuit mission founded in the eighteenth century, and a mission-style church still stands on the main square. Today it forms one half of Los Cabos, linked to Cabo San Lucas by a long coastal highway known as the Tourist Corridor. The international airport lies just to the north.
