San Luis Obispo sits in a valley on California's Central Coast, roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Downtown grew up around the mission founded in 1772. San Luis Obispo Creek still winds through the centre, sometimes in the open and sometimes tucked behind buildings. The street grid tilts slightly, following the valley rather than the compass.
Around the city rises a chain of old volcanic plugs known as the Nine Sisters, or Morros, including Bishop Peak and Cerro San Luis. On a map they appear as blank, rounded shapes pressing against the street network.
