San Miguel Ajusco lies in the borough of Tlalpan, in the far south of Mexico City, on the lower slopes of the Ajusco volcano. It is one of the capital's original pueblos. From above, a small centre of streets gives way to scattered houses, fields and then forest climbing toward the summit.
Ajusco is the highest peak within Mexico City, and its forests and volcanic slopes are among the most important green areas remaining in the Valley of Mexico. The pueblo keeps a rural feel, with its church, fields and festivals, even though it is still inside the city limits.
