San Pedro lies in the north of Buenos Aires Province, on the right bank of the Paraná River. The town sits on high barrancas, cliffs that drop down to the water, and from above the contrast is striking: a regular grid of blocks on the high ground, the river's channels and islands below, and a fringe of green along the edge. It is a map with a strong sense of place.
The area is linked to the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado in 1845, when Argentine forces stretched chains across the Paraná to hold back an Anglo-French fleet; the site lies within the district. San Pedro is also known for its fruit orchards and for ensaimadas, a pastry that has become a local speciality.
