Santa Rita do Sapucaí is in the south of Minas Gerais, in rolling country between the Mantiqueira foothills and the Sapucaí River. On a map, the town fills a valley floor and climbs the slopes around it. The streets bend to follow the terrain, and the surrounding hills are divided into pastures and coffee plots.
The centre is compact, with a church square and streets that fan out from it, and newer neighbourhoods have spread up the hillsides.
