Santander de Quilichao is in northern Cauca, on the stretch of land where the Cauca valley begins to open between the western and central cordilleras. From above, the town is a compact grid of Spanish colonial origin, set on gently sloping ground. Green hills rise on the horizon, and farms and small settlements are scattered across the countryside around it.
The Pan-American Highway runs through the area and ties the town to Cali in the north and Popayán in the south. That position makes it a stop and a crossroads for the region. The highway shows up on the map as one strong line cutting past the regular blocks of the centre, with lesser roads branching off toward the hills.
