Santo Tomás is a town in the Colombian department of Atlántico, south of Barranquilla, on the western side of the lower Magdalena River. On a map the town has a long, narrow shape. Its streets form a grid that stretches between the regional highway on one side and the river and its wetlands on the other, with the plaza and church near the middle.
Beyond the town, the land flattens into the floodplain. There are lagoons, channels and marshes, and on a detailed map they show up as soft, irregular shapes. They contrast with the rectangular blocks of the town. The Magdalena itself is wide here, and at a broad framing it becomes a strong diagonal band across the poster.
Santo Tomás is known across Colombia for its Holy Week traditions, especially the penitents who walk the streets on Good Friday.
