São Cristóvão sits on high ground in the Sergipe lowlands, a few kilometres inland from the coast. From above, the old centre is a compact cluster of short streets and open squares along the crest. Below it, the newer districts spread out along the roads that run down toward the river flats and the wetlands at the edge of the town.
It is one of the oldest towns in Brazil and was the capital of Sergipe until the seat moved to Aracaju in the nineteenth century. Its São Francisco Square, framed by colonial religious and civic buildings, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a map the square shows up as a clean open rectangle among the tight blocks of the upper town.

Around it, the newer neighbourhoods are drawn in looser grids, with the green and blank spaces of the river country between them. River lowlands
Low, wet ground borders the town, so development stops at soft, uneven edges. The result is a settlement drawn as an island of streets in open country.
