São Domingos do Prata is a municipality in eastern Minas Gerais, in the hilly country that characterises much of the state. From above, the town does not spread out on a flat grid. Instead, its streets follow the contours of the land, climbing ridges and running along the valley floors where building is easiest.
The centre forms a compact cluster, with the main church and square typical of towns in Minas at its heart. From there, roads leave in several directions, winding through the surrounding hills toward farms and neighbouring towns. Small streams in the valleys add thin, irregular lines that follow the lowest ground.
