São Pedro da Cova is a parish in the municipality of Gondomar, in the hills east of Porto. On a map the streets rarely run straight. They follow the contours, curving up and around slopes, and houses line them in long ribbons instead of compact blocks. Patches of woodland and open hillside break up the built-up areas, so the map combines dense residential lines with softer empty ground.
For much of the twentieth century São Pedro da Cova was a coal-mining community. Its mines were among the most important in Portugal until they closed in 1970. Traces of that past, including the old mine buildings and the miners’ neighbourhoods, remain part of local identity, and the parish still remembers itself as a working town.
