Scheveningen is the coastal district of The Hague, facing the North Sea along a broad sandy beach. On a map the shoreline is almost perfectly straight. The boulevard runs parallel to it, and the district's streets step back inland in a dense grid. To the south lies the harbour, cut into the land as a pair of long basins.
It began as a fishing village and grew into one of the best-known seaside resorts in the Netherlands. The Kurhaus, a grand nineteenth-century hotel, still faces the beach, and the pier reaches out into the sea nearby. During the Second World War the name was reportedly used as a shibboleth, because its opening sounds are hard for non-Dutch speakers to pronounce.

South of the beach, two harbour basins are cut into the land behind the coast. Their crisp geometric shape stands out clearly in black and white.
Pier and Kurhaus
The pier projects into the sea near the Kurhaus. It is one of the few man-made lines to cross the shore and an easy landmark to find on the map.
