Schiedam sits on the north bank of the Nieuwe Maas, directly west of Rotterdam, where the small river Schie once flowed into the larger waterway. From above, the historic core is a compact knot of canals and quays. Narrow streets run between the water channels, and wider harbour basins open to the south towards the river and the port.
The town's name and fortune came from that river mouth. For centuries Schiedam was the centre of Dutch jenever distilling, and the malt wine trade needed grain mills. Several tall traditional windmills still stand along the former ramparts. They are among the tallest classic windmills in the world, built high so their sails could catch wind above the surrounding warehouses.

Curving canals trace the line of the former fortifications, post-war neighbourhoods spread north in regular blocks, and the river frontage fills with docks, slipways and industrial piers. Mills on the ramparts
The distillery-era windmills stand along the edge of the old town, following the former defensive line. On the map their position traces the boundary between the medieval core and later growth.
