Schweizer-Reneke is a small town in South Africa's North West province, on the Harts River. On a map it is a tidy cluster of streets on the river's edge, with a separate residential area nearby and roads heading out in straight lines across the flat highveld. Around it, large rectangular farm plots fill the map, broken only by the thin, winding line of the river.
The town takes its name from two men, Schweizer and Reneke, who were killed during a nineteenth-century frontier campaign in the area. Today it serves a farming district known for maize and cattle, and the surrounding land looks exactly like that from above: broad fields, farm tracks and very few curves.
