Sète occupies a narrow strip of land between the Mediterranean and the Étang de Thau, a large lagoon. From above, the town is defined by water: canals cross the centre, quays line the harbour, and Mont Saint-Clair rises as a single hill above the streets. Long beaches stretch southwest along the coast.
The port was founded in 1666 under Louis XIV, as the Mediterranean outlet of the Canal du Midi. The poet Paul Valéry and the singer Georges Brassens were both born in Sète, and Valéry is buried in the Cimetière marin overlooking the sea. The town is also known for its summer water jousting tournaments.
