Sevran lies in Seine-Saint-Denis, less than twenty kilometres northeast of central Paris. The most striking feature on its map is the Canal de l'Ourcq, which cuts across the town in a long, almost perfectly straight line. The canal has carried water toward the capital since the early nineteenth century, and its towpaths now serve walkers and cyclists.
On either side of the canal, the street pattern changes character several times. There are older suburban lanes of small houses, larger housing estates with their own internal geometry, and wide roads linking the RER B stations of Sevran-Livry and Sevran-Beaudottes. The rail lines and the canal divide the town into distinct sectors, each easy to read from above.
Along the canal lies the Parc forestier de la Poudrerie, a wooded park created on the site of a former national gunpowder factory. Its paths and alleys fill a broad green area on the map.
